Introduction
To paraphrase a quote I once heard, a novice plays the game; an expert plays their character; a master plays the opponent. To truly fight the opponent directly in a battle of wits, you must have the game and the character function as an extension of your will.
When I was first learning the ropes for Soul Calibur V, I couldn't find a character that appealed to me. I found that the new "intended playstyle" of my former main clashed with my own developing style. In an effort to gain perspective, I branched out to Aeon. What I found by doing this is that Aeon was "dumbed down" from SCIV's Lizardman and I didn't enjoy playing him.
I know I'm late 2 da partay but, seriously, I can't find any tierlist (das not a wurd lol) thread that I can post in and I never got to share my opinion. If possible, I want this to be a discussion because I want to talk about everyone's perspective and actually like to hear this stuff (so, if we can, no close, please). I mean, I know people get angry for whatever reason but that's just another spice of life, right?
I'd like it if, rather than posting you guyseses own that you criticize mine. Now, I understand that might not always be the case but I'd at least like for the topic to start off that way so that I can give a chance to give some reasoning. But, please, be direct in your criticism and questioning; it's much harder to answer the question, "Why is *X* here?" as opposed to answering, "Why is *X* here and not here?" or "Why is *X" here instead of *Y*?"
Everyone knows how to sidestep- move out of the way of those big verticals, or that BB spam, and hit the opponent while they’re open. But do you know how to backstep? The backstep is a powerful tool that enables an instant shift in momentum, a creation of chance from nothingness. Utilizing it properly will put you that much closer to achieving your true strength. Step on[...]
Like clockwork, it's time for another SoulCast! For this episode, I take a look at Pyrrha with guest Xephukai, a player who's had great tournament success, including EVO and the more recent MLG Summer Championship, and whose name I'm sure you've heard a few times.
Also, this episode debuts my new ft5 challenge to all my guests, which I hope serves as a good demonstration of the things we discuss in the podcast, if nothing else. Should be entertaining for you, either way. That's how match vids go, right? Videos after the break.[...]
August 24th- Aug. 27th, While America had it's own major tournament (MLG), in Germany, East Brandenburg Open (EBO for short), was also going on. Big names such as Ring, Hyrul, Malek, Pantocrator, daGOTTh, JAG, and others that can be viewed further into the article, were battling it out for the "champion" title of EBO.
With the aftermath proving to be in Ring's favor, I thought I'd catch up with some of the top placers via EBO. As well as posting the results, links towards the videos, and pictures taken by our very own community members all the way from Germany. Continued after the break[...]
Fighting is difficult. You have to worry about mixups, frames, okizeme- the opponent is a thorn in your side, a problem. He has all of these options and you have to compensate for them. What if- you didn’t have to play his game at all? What if you could control the match and only engage the opponent when you wanted to?
There is a way- a very important concept that you may have heard of before. It’s called “spacing”. It is a technique that, when mastered, can make you impossible to hit- an untouchable master of your domain.

Some of you may notice that during your Soul Calibur V "career", you start to stagnate with your character. There are no more combos to learn, no more little tricks for your character. You play and play, but you feel that the outcome of a match is up in the air.
"It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle."
